Saturday 27 April marked a significant milestone at Oropesa del Mar with the release of the loggerhead turtle known as “Francis”. This turtle was rescued in poor condition and spent several months recovering under the care of experts at the ARCA del Mar centre at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia. Francis’s release into the sea not only symbolises a triumph for marine conservation, but also highlights the commitment of the local community and authorities to the protection of marine life.
Numerous people attended the release of the animal, a young loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) weighing around 7.5 kg and estimated to be between 5 and 10 years old.
According to the Spanish Ministry, sea turtles are highly migratory species with complex life cycles, generally occupying different types of habitats throughout their lives; Spanish waters are home to important feeding and development areas.

In the Spanish Mediterranean, observations indicate that the main area of concentration for the loggerhead turtle is the Levantino-Balearic region (Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca, Tarragona and Girona). Significant concentrations are also found in the Alboran Sea, particularly in Málaga, Marbella, Cádiz, Chipiona and Sanlúcar de Barrameda; between 1997 and 2015, 2,495 stranded sea turtles were reported along the Andalusian coast.
The Importance of Marine Conservation in Oropesa
Oropesa del Mar is not only a popular tourist destination thanks to its beaches and climate, but also an example of how the local community can play a crucial role in marine conservation. Francis’s story highlights the need to protect endangered species such as the loggerhead turtle, which is essential to the ecological balance of our coasts.
Right next to Oropesa del Mar lies the Cabanes Natural Park; this natural area protects and preserves countless species of plants and animals, thereby helping to maintain the region’s ecological balance. A visit to the Natural Park allows you to connect with nature and reflect on our role on the planet. From releasing sea turtles to exploring the park’s trails, every experience at Oropesa del Mar and the Cabanes Natural Park inspires us to protect and conserve our planet.
As well as the turtle release, the day’s volunteering also involved a coastal clean-up to remove litter such as plastics, building materials, wet wipes and cigarette ends… Oropesa del Mar emphasises the importance of preserving our marine biodiversity.
