If you visit Oropesa del Mar, I’ll let you in on a secret: you’re in for a real treat.
This town on the Costa Azahar boasts not only spectacular beaches, but also a rich, varied and, in many cases, affordable culinary scene.
Today I’m going to tell you about my experience visiting restaurants in Oropesa del Mar, with memorable dishes, good prices and picture-postcard locations.
Oropesa del Mar: where to eat? Options to suit all tastes
From traditional rice restaurants to casual bars overlooking the sea, the variety is vast. Here I’ll share some places that really do exist and are well worth a visit.
Best restaurants in Oropesa del Mar: from rice speciality restaurants to fast food
On one of the days when I was really peckish, I set out in search of a good rice restaurant in Oropesa del Mar. I stumbled upon Restaurante Puerta del Sol, at Calle del Mar, 20.
It’s just a few steps from La Concha Beach. I tried their ‘arroz del señoret’ and loved it: perfectly cooked rice, fresh seafood and a rich flavour.
The terrace is right by the sea, with a lovely view thanks to the mix of sunshine and shade from the awnings.
For a casual option with a relaxed atmosphere and sea views, try El Torico 3 on the Paseo Marítimo de la Concha. Its menu includes classic tapas, grilled fish, fideuá and some well-made sandwiches.
The terrace is spacious and perfect for a leisurely meal whilst enjoying the sea breeze. A very good choice if you want to eat well in a stunning setting without any fuss.
Set menus in Oropesa del Mar: a great option without breaking the bank
If you’re looking for restaurants in Oropesa del Mar offering a set menu, there are several options that stand out for their good food, affordable prices and welcoming atmosphere.
This culinary tradition is deeply rooted in the area, and many establishments offer complete set menus — including a starter, main course, dessert and drink — at very reasonable prices.
One of the most popular with locals is Bar Restaurante Mary, at Avinguda de la Mar, 49, 12594 Orpesa, Castelló.
Its set menu, starting at 11 euros, features traditional dishes such as paella, baked rice or stewed meat, with generous portions and a home-cooked flavour.
It’s a simple option, but offers excellent value for money.
Another option that combines modernity with good food is El Olivo Tapas & Bar, at Av. la Plana, 24, 12594 Oropesa del Mar, Castellón.
Although it’s best known for its tapas, it also offers a set menu featuring well-prepared Mediterranean dishes.
Its contemporary atmosphere and attentive service make it ideal if you’re looking for something a bit more up-to-date but just as affordable.
Eating well on a budget in Oropesa del Mar: 4 places you can’t go wrong with
Casa Lovin Playa
Passeig Marítim del Mediterrani 30, Morro de Gos beach
Right on the seafront at Morro de Gos beach, with a rating of 4.2 out of 5 and over 150 reviews. Mediterranean cuisine with your feet practically in the sand – which is half the reason to come here.
Bar Los Gatos
Carrer de Dunkerque 14, Oropesa del Mar
The highest-rated of those not featured in the guidebooks: a 4.4 out of 5. Traditional Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine, on a quiet street in the town.
Faro Real Restaurant
5 Calle Almería, Oropesa del Mar
With sea views and a menu centred on Mediterranean cuisine. It offers a set lunch menu, tapas and dishes such as black rice or fideuá. A 4.1 out of 5 with over three hundred reviews.
La Parrilla
22 Calle Goya, Oropesa del Mar
For when you fancy meat rather than fish. Rated 4.1 out of 5, it’s in the town centre and just two doors down from the town’s top-rated restaurant, so Calle Goya is a safe bet.
Where to have dinner in Oropesa del Mar
Dining here isn’t just about eating later. It changes the setting, the pace and even the part of the town you should head up to. If you’re looking for a quiet dinner, the two best-rated restaurants in the whole of Oropesa del Mar aren’t on the promenade: they’re up in the old town.
In the old town, at a leisurely pace
Restaurante a Roda (Calle Goya 34–36) is the highest-rated restaurant in the town, with a 4.5 out of 5 based on over a hundred reviews. It serves Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine in the upper part of the town, away from the hustle and bustle of the promenade.
La Casa Encesa (Plaza de la Iglesia 3, on the way up to the castle) is very close by, with a rating of 4.4. It’s both a restaurant and an art space, so your dinner comes with a little something extra to look at. It’s just a stone’s throw from the castle, so you can head up there beforehand to watch the sunset over the village.
Right by the sea, with the promenade in front
If you’d prefer to dine with a view of the sea, the La Concha seafront promenade is where most of the tables are concentrated. Restaurante Puerta del Sol (Paseo Marítimo de la Concha 14) has the most reviews of any place on Oropesa del Mar – over 1,300 – with a rating of 4.2. A few metres further on, at number 36, Restaurante Mendiola maintains a rating of 4.1 with just over 600 reviews.
Rice dishes and paella: where to find the best
We’re in the Valencian Community, so rice isn’t just another dish on the menu. It deserves a search of its own, and these are the places where people order it and keep coming back.
Restaurante Puerta del Sol is the go-to spot for variety: seafood paella, creamy rice dishes and a terrace overlooking the promenade. Arrocería Mesón El Poble Roge (Avenida del Mar) even has ‘rice’ in its name and scores around 4.2 with nearly 250 reviews. Restaurante Lasarte, in the Marina d'Or area, is one of the few to maintain a 4.2 rating with over 600 reviews.
If you fancy trying fideuá – which is the same dish but made with vermicelli instead of rice – you’ll find it on almost every menu in the area.
Eating out in the Marina d'Or area
Marina d'Or is about three kilometres north of the town centre, so those staying or living there don’t usually go down to the town to eat. The choice is more limited than in the centre, but there’s one clear standout.
Restaurante Lasarte (23 Carrer Amplaries) is by far the best-rated restaurant in the area: a 4.2 rating based on over six hundred reviews, serving Mediterranean cuisine and rice dishes. For pizza, Pizzeria Rustica is the best known in the area, although its rating is lower.
It’s worth bearing in mind if you’re thinking of buying a flat in Oropesa del Mar: living in the Marina d'Or area means having leisure facilities on your doorstep, but heading down to the village for Sunday’s long lunch.
Pizza, ice cream and Italian cuisine
It’s not all about rice. L’Arena Pizzeria (Avenida Faro 42) is the Italian restaurant with the best combination of rating and track record, with a 4.2 and over 170 reviews. For dessert, Gelateria Fiorentina (Calle Cervantes 4) scores as high as 4.4: an ice-cream parlour and Italian sweets shop right in the centre, just a stone’s throw from the promenade.
Eating well is part of the plan, although it isn’t the whole plan. The beaches, the castle and the sightseeing trips – which are best booked for before or after your meal – are listed in the guide to Things to do in Oropesa del Mar.
