Day trips from Oropesa del Mar

Oropesa del Mar is ideally situated for exploring the interior of Castellón without having to drive too far. These are the day trips we most highly recommend to anyone coming to spend a few days here or who already lives here.

Sierra Espadán Natural Park

The Sierra Espadán Natural Park, situated in the interior of the province of Castellón, is a vast area covering 19 towns and villages, offering a natural refuge of great ecological and cultural value.

This park, designated a protected natural area by the Valencian Community, is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and history. Lush forests of cork oaks, pines and oaks stretch across its mountains, providing a diverse habitat rich in native flora and fauna.

Within the park, visitors can explore ancient castles and mills, vestiges of history that still stand amidst the vegetation. The Sierra Espadán is home to trenches from the Spanish Civil War, offering a unique insight into the historical events that took place in this region.

These features, combined with the numerous footpaths and routes of varying difficulty, allow visitors to lose themselves in a unique natural setting, where every step reveals new aspects of the history and natural beauty of the Valencian Community.

San José Caves, in the Vall d’Uixó

The San José Caves, located in the Vall d’Uixó, are home to the longest navigable underground river in the whole of Europe. This impressive cave system offers visitors a unique experience, allowing them to explore the depths of the earth whilst navigating its crystal-clear waters.

The boat trip through the caves reveals spectacular geological formations, with stalactites and stalagmites that have taken millennia to form, creating an underground landscape of breathtaking beauty.

As well as the boat trip, the San José Caves offer a walking tour that allows visitors to appreciate the natural wonders of this unique environment at closer quarters.

With a constant temperature of around 20 degrees, the atmosphere inside the caves is always pleasant, making this excursion an ideal activity all year round. This underground journey is not only a fascinating adventure, but also an educational opportunity to learn about the geology and history of the region.

Desert de les Palmes

Desert de les Palmes, situated in the province of Castellón, is a natural park covering more than 3,000 hectares, providing an important green space for the towns of Benicàssim, Cabanes, La Pobla Tornesa, Borriol and Castelló de la Plana.

This natural area is characterised by its rich biodiversity, with a wide variety of flora and fauna, including species endemic to the region. Its mountainous terrain offers a spectacular landscape that combines the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea with the majesty of its peaks and valleys.

The park boasts a network of well-signposted trails that allow visitors to explore its diverse ecosystems and points of interest. Among the most notable routes are those leading to the ruins of the Carmelite convent, a former 17th-century monastery that offers a glimpse into the region’s historical past.

From the highest peaks, walkers can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the coast, making the Desert de les Palmes an ideal destination for both nature lovers and those interested in history and culture.

Columbretes Islands

This group of islets, 48 km off the coast, is a small oasis of life halfway between the Balearic Islands and the Iberian Peninsula.

Here you can see craters and the remains of the vent of an extinct volcano, as well as unique marine species, which can be spotted whilst snorkelling and diving in its waters.
