International Women’s Day, celebrated every 8 March, is a key occasion to reflect on progress towards gender equality and the challenges that still remain. This day recognises the importance of unity and solidarity in the fight for women’s rights, promoting a future with greater opportunities in all areas.

In 2025, access to housing and financial independence remain key pillars of women’s empowerment.

Investing in property: autonomy and quality of life

Buying a property remains one of the best investments for women seeking security, stability and a return on investment. In recent years, many have chosen to invest in coastal properties, not only as a personal retreat but also as a source of additional income.

🔹 A space of one’s own and a better quality of life: Owning a beachfront apartment is synonymous with wellbeing – a place to unwind, work remotely and enjoy time with family.

🔹 A smart investment: A property in a tourist area, such as Oropesa del Mar or Cabanes, offers the possibility of letting it out during the months when it is not in use, generating passive income.

🔹 A forward-thinking decision: By 2025, demand for holiday rentals in coastal destinations will continue to boom, guaranteeing long-term property appreciation.

More female homeowners in Spain

The number of women who own their own homes in Spain has continued to grow in recent years. According to the latest figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE):

📌 In 2025, 29.5% of households in Spain are owned by women, consolidating an upward trend.

📌 In 2015, this figure stood at 22.8 per cent, reflecting significant growth in just a decade.

📌 Globally, Spain is following the trend seen in other European countries where the proportion of female homeowners exceeds 30 per cent, approaching the levels seen in Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.

However, inequalities persist in other parts of the world. In countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, fewer than 10 per cent of homes are registered in a woman’s name, highlighting the need to continue promoting access to home ownership as a means of economic independence.

What is driving this growth in Spain?

✅ Progress in gender equality: More women are gaining access to well-paid jobs, increasing their financial capacity to buy a home.

✅ Greater access to finance: Banks and private institutions have launched financial products tailored to women to facilitate access to property purchase.

✅ Government initiatives: Support programmes and subsidies have encouraged women to buy their own homes.

More women in the labour market

The rise in female home ownership goes hand in hand with the increased presence of women in the labour market.

📊 By 2025, the female employment rate in Spain will exceed 49 per cent, approaching parity with men.

📊 However, the pay gap and access to leadership roles remain ongoing challenges.

📌 In sectors such as construction and property, women’s role has grown, but they still account for a small percentage of management positions.
